In the Introduction to "They say/ I say": The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerala Graff and Cathy Birkenstein provide templates designed to help students organize their structure of arguments. Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the types of writing templates they offer a guidance which assists students to write more effectively. As the authors themselves put it, "The Mere act of crafting a sentence... get us thinking critically about our own beliefs, and perhaps even to change our minds." Although some people believe this reduces creativity of writers and make them not think about their own styles of structure, Graff and Birkenstein insist that templates help students organize their works and build foundations of the writing. In sum, then, their view is that to use a template helps people know what they talk and have arrangement of ideas in their articles. I agree with their thoughts. In my view, the types of templates that the authors recommend are very helpful to our writing in every works. For instance, when we have to write something formal and we do not know how to do it, templates are useful to let us know the formal structure. In addition, templates are important in informal works. Some might object, of course, on the grounds that templates may be used again and again and it has nothing new to people. Yet I would argue that templates help people do perfect works. Overall, then, I believe templates are positive to students' writing and they help us improve abilities of writing.
